Supreme’s recent collaboration with Louis Vuitton won the popular streetwear company a great deal of attention in recent weeks. It afforded Supreme an ideal opportunity to release a new line, which has spurred political discourse in the fashion community. The new Spring/Summer lookbook centers around our country’s controversial and volatile political state, featuring a number of pieces reading “Fuck the President.” No matter your political affiliation, it’s astonishing to see this wildly popular brand broadcasting such a powerful message. Each day, America sees increasing amounts of celebrities and businesses use their voices to appease the nation’s state, but this statement stands out.
In addition to their t-shirts, Supreme leaked an ensemble of pants and a jacket decorated with the face of former president Barack Obama. The brand has earned a reputation for being bold with their clothing, but these pieces rises above. Given Supreme’s target demographic, and the long established tradition of liberal youths, the anti-Trump stance is unsurprising. However, the line is still shocking: our clothing is often how others form their first impressions. What does “Fuck the President” say? It’s words of encouragement to the frightened citizens, the children stepping into adulthood on unstable ground. Supreme encourages the deviant behavior necessary to counteract the aspects of our society and culture our current president is working hard to change. Supreme was aware of the risks associated with their new line, but the brand was determined in their mission and undeterred by whatever storms may come. Expect to see these items on a block near you soon.
